ITALY, Renaissance period Lamb Sculpture... - Lot 6 - L'Huillier & Associés
ITALY, Renaissance period Lamb Sculpture in white marble Height: 42 cm - width: 367 cm Width of the base: 30 cm - depth of the base: 27.2 cm. (small accidents and missing, old restoration visible at the tail and the top of the skull) By its naturalism, this marble lamb refers to ancient sculpted animals such as those kept in the Animal Room of the Vatican collections. The sculpted base on all sides seems to indicate that it was sculpted for its own sake and not to take its place in a larger composition. It refers to the Christian symbolism of the Paschal Lamb, which is confirmed by the discreet presence of a pomegranate symbolizing the union of Christians around the same Faith. The light wear of the surface also suggests that it is a devotional object caressed by the faithful. This representation seems to be a unicum for the modern period, making it difficult to date it to between the 15th and 16th centuries. Expert Albéric Froissart : 06.80.26.86.38
