Marie-Gabrielle CAPET (1761-1818) Portrait... - Lot 36 - L'Huillier & Associés
Marie-Gabrielle CAPET (1761-1818) Portrait of a woman wearing a blue dress, sitting on an armchair. Round miniature on ivory, signed "M Gabrielle Capet... de la rep f" at the bottom left. Diameter : 6.8 cm Rare are the miniatures of Marie Gabrielle Capet. She learns painting under the direction of Adélaïde Labille-Guiard. After having exhibited paintings at the Salon at the end of the 18th century and having made a name for herself, she exhibited her first miniatures there from 1791 onwards, which ensured her fame until the end of her career. Capet frequently met other artists, such as Joseph-Marie Vien, Houdon, as well as François-André Vincent and, of course, Labille-Guiard. When her teacher and landlady Adélaïde Labille-Guiard fell ill, Marie Capet took care of her until her death in 1803. One of her most famous paintings is undoubtedly "L'atelier de Madame Labille-Guiard-Vincent", circa 1800, in which the painter Vincent, Joseph-Marie Vien, Jacques-Augustin Pajou, Jean Alaux, Etienne and Léon Pallière, Jean-Joseph Ansiaux, Jean-François-Leonor Mérimée, Charles Thévenin, Charles Meynier and François-Édouard Picot can be seen (executed circa 1808 and preserved in the Neue Pinakothek).
