François Edme RICOIS (1795-1881) Elegants... - Lot 39 - L'Huillier & Associés
François Edme RICOIS (1795-1881) Elegants along the Seine in front of the Château de la Mailleraye (probably the Mortemart family) Oil on canvas, signed lower left, dated 1830. 47.5 x 72 cm In a Restoration period frame decorated with palmettes friezes (accidents to the frame). The interest of this painting by Ricois is notably the representation of the castle of La Mailleraye (Seine-Maritime) which was destroyed in the 19th century. The castle changed hands several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1767, the Duchess of Chaulnes sold the Mailleraye to the Marquise de Nagu. It was her daughter, the Dowager Marchioness of Mortemart, who owned it in 1830 when François Edme Ricois painted our picture. The latter died in 1853, her son and daughter the Duchess of Crillon had not survived her, it was her daughter-in-law who sold the property in 1854. The buyers wanted to make it the "object of an exploitation" which was only the dismantling and the sale of the stones from 1857... Only the chapel remains, which is still the property of the d'Harcourt family. A student of Bertin and Girodet, Ricois exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1819. He never stopped travelling throughout France and painted numerous views of castles and their surroundings.
