Auguste BAUD-BOVY (1848-1899) The wounded... - Lot 30 - L'Huillier & Associés
Auguste BAUD-BOVY (1848-1899) The wounded deer Oil on canvas signed lower right. 82,5 x 126 cm In a carved wooden frame decorated with a foliage frieze. A collection of engravings is attached: Twenty works of the painter BAUD-BOVY (1848-1899) Provenance: Cabinet of a curious, collection of a Parisian amateur. Auguste Baud-Bovy, born in Geneva on February 13, 1848, and died in Davos on June 3, 1899, is a Swiss painter. Auguste Baud frequented the castle of Gruyères, property of the Bovy family of jewellers. This place welcomed many artists like Camille Corot or Gustave Courbet. The young Auguste became a pupil of Barthélemy Menn, a friend of the above-mentioned artists, and also a member of the circle dominated by the figure of the painter Henri-Daniel Bovy (1812-1862), who asked them to redecorate the castle of Gruyères. In 1868, Auguste married Zoé Bovy (1839-1917). He signed his paintings "Baud-Bovy". He maintained friendly relations with the refugees of the Paris Commune (1871) in Geneva, such as the anarchists Élisée Reclus and Élie Reclus. He also allowed Gustave Courbet to enter Switzerland. Our painting, close to Courbet's style, expresses the drama of the last moments, a dramatic suspended moment, treated with great realism.
