Henri Morez's press cartoon workshop live behind closed doors

We present you our next live sale behind closed doors of Henri Morez's press cartoon workshop which will take place on Friday, May 28th from 1:30 pm in live behind closed doors.

Born in Romania in 1922, Henri Morez (real name Hers Askenas), left his country of origin due to the surrounding anti-Semitism, to settle in Paris with his family when he was only 5 years old. This allowed him to spend all his Sundays in the Louvre, in front of paintings by Turner and Corot. At the age of 16, he was spotted by Mané-Katz, a great Jewish painter of the Paris school, who took him under his wing, and whose studio he would later take over on rue Notre Dame des Champs. A few months later, in 1938, two of his paintings were accepted at the Salon d'Automne, but the Second World War came at the beginning of his career. He was forced to flee and go into hiding, while his parents were sent to a concentration camp. After the liberation, he abandoned painting to devote himself to caricatures and press cartoons. He first published in Krokodil, a Russian communist magazine, before being fired because of a drawing considered in bad taste by Moscow. In 1954, he received the Robert Carrizey humour prize: his reputation was made! He published in Le Figaro littéraire, Paris Match, Lui, Jour de France, Bizarre, France Dimanche, as well as in foreign magazines such as Punch or Panorama . His work as a caricaturist has allowed him to meet and befriend Sempé, Goscinny, Cabu, Uderzo, and Pierre Dac.

His production gathers about 10,000 drawings, some of which are reproduced in his collection " Afourismes", published in 2013. His illustrated puns testify that "humor is the essential antidote to the gloom of life and the despair of everyone" said his editor.

The survivor's humility and wry humor was his signature, which can be seen in each of his drawings.
