André BEAUREPAIRE (1924 - 2012) - Lot 258
André BEAUREPAIRE (1924 - 2012) Characters Pair of drawings, one signed lower left, one signed lower right. 29 x 22 cm This self-taught cartoonist was born in Paris in 1924. He illustrated Sagesse by Paul Verlaine in 1944, and was then noticed by Jean Cocteau and the illustrator and decorator Christian Bérard. Both invited him to participate in the creation of the sets for the exhibition Le Théâtre de la mode (1945) devoted to French haute couture. As an illustrator, set and costume designer, he then collaborated with Jean Cocteau, Roland Petit, Jean Genet, Frederick Ashton, Léonide Massine, Gian Carlo Menotti, Jean Marais and the stylist Yohji Yamamoto. André Beaurepaire also creates sets and costumes for major European stages, such as the Paris Opera, La Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London and the Amsterdam Opera. His works are primarily in Indian ink, but he also uses pastel, oil and acrylic paints. Composed of landscapes, megacities, towers of Babel, aerial views and cathedrals, they are willingly inspired by the architecture and compositions of Paolo Uccello or Piranesi. In the 1980s, he developed new themes: planets and cosmic visions, seascapes, still lifes, strange heads and infernal figures (Universalis.fr).
