Marie-Gabrielle CAPET (1761-1818) Portrait... - Lot 149 - L'Huillier & Associés
Marie-Gabrielle CAPET (1761-1818) Portrait of a man in a brown frock coat Miniature on ivory, signed lower right and dated year 3 (?) Diameter : 6,8 cm Marie-Gabrielle was born in Lyon on September 6, 1761. A student of Adelaide Labille-Guiard, her models included Madame Longrois, wife of the Intendant of Fontainebleau, the Reverend Father Moisset, Superior General of the Oratory, and members of the royal family, including Madame Adelaide and Madame Victoire de France, daughters of Louis XV. At the Salon of 1791, Marie-Gabrielle exhibited her miniatures, which she continued to produce for the rest of her life. In 1792 the income from these works allowed her to lend money to Adelaide Labille-Guiard so that she could buy a house in Pontault-en-Brie with the painter François-André Vincent. Even after Adelaide married François-André in 1799, she continued to live in the couple's house. Together with Adélaïde Labille-Guiard she obtained an artist's apartment in the Louvre. When the latter fell ill, Marie-Gabrielle Capet took care of her until her death in 1803. Capet represented many artists, including Vien, Suvée, Houdon, Pallière, Meynier, Vincent and Labille-Guiard. Moreover, the Commission des Artistes awarded her an honorable mention for her large miniature by Houdon, presented at the 1801 Salon. In the 1800s, her models included officers, colonial officials and even a "lady of the palace" of the Queen of Spain. She painted a large interior scene in oil showing Madame Vincent (formerly Labille-Guiard) in her studio, portraying the painter and senator Vien (Vincent's master), in the presence of members of the Vien family, students, but also Vincent and his students. Marie-Gabrielle is herself present, loading the palette of Adelaide. This group portrait is thus a true genealogy of the artistic family of Marie-Gabrielle Capet. She died in Paris on November 1, 1818. Provenance: Château de la Maroutière
