Like many busts of the period, we have not yet been able to identify the figure. However, the treatment of the hair and the modeling are close to the busts made by David d'Angers (1788-1856). He saw the portrait as a deeply moral art. According to him, the representation of famous individuals helped to maintain and stimulate moral virtues. I am a historical writer', said David d'Angers, 'and my task is to make famous the physiognomy of eminent people of our time... I see art... as a method of teaching the ideals of the human race.'
He concentrated on the expression of the face. The purity of line, the search for ideal beauty but also his 'vigorous and powerful technique', especially in this bust, indicate an ardent spirit open to the aspirations of the Romantics.
