Clément Marot was born in Cahors in 1496. Trained by a father who was himself a poet in poetry and rhetoric, he entered the service of the lord of Villeroy and then of Marguerite d'Angouleme, sister of François I and future queen of Navarre. He succeeded his father in the service of King François I and frequented humanist circles and evangelical circles. His sympathies for the Reformation and his great freedom of spirit got him into trouble. In 1529, he was accused of heresy and put in prison. Freed by the intervention of Francis I, he became the court's official poet. He was again arrested in 1532, then in 1534 after the affair of the placards, he took refuge in Nérac with Marguerite d'Angoulême, queen of Navarre, then in Ferrare, at the court of Renée de France, daughter of Louis XII. He abjured Protestantism in 1536 and obtained a pardon from the king. He returned to Paris in 1537 and regained the status of official court poet. Our edition is one of the first editions just after his death in 1550. Provenance : An apartment of a family in Rennes
