Follower of Michel Claude dit CLODION Terra cotta group representing a Bacchante and a child holding a bird France, late 18th century Resting on a circular base entirely molded (chips and small lacks). Height: 40 cm Expert : Mrs Isabelle d'AMECOURT Provenance: European Sculpture and Works of Art sale, Christie's, London, December 6, 1988, lot 98 (7500 pounds). Comparative Bibliography: Paris, Musée du Louvre, A. L. Poulet, G. Scherf, Clodion, 1738-1814, March 17-June 29, 1992, cat. exp. pp. 323-6. The author of our group was strongly inspired by works made by Clodion in the years 1780-90 representing young women holding trays filled with fruit in one hand and a child in the other. There is a similar female drapery around the Bacchante's body and an instability in the way she carries the child (Scherf, loc. cit.).
