Pair of officer's double flintlock pistols by J. LAMOTTE L'AINE. Table-top barrels with gold and engraving remains. Lock plates signed "J LAMOTTE L'AINE" and flat-bodied hammers engraved with rocaille motifs. Double trigger tails, one short. Silver thumb piece. Walnut stocks (chips and missing front barrel on one). Chased iron fittings, cap nails with radiating suns. Wooden sticks. Length: 39 cm. E.M. (Heavy pitting in places). Circa 1780. Joseph LAMOTTE or LAMOTHE (1716-1807). A harquebusier from Saint-Etienne, he notably worked for the Spanish infant Don Philippe. The radiating suns may indicate that he was an officer in the King's bodyguard.
