Jumping chest of drawers in wood and veneer, opening with th - Lot 45
Jumping chest of drawers in wood and veneer, opening with three drawers in front, decorated in marquetry with trophies of musical instruments and mock fluting. Cambered legs finished with lion pastes. Later ormolu trim and white veined marble top (restorations, cracks, marble chips). Marked stamp. "JA.ARTZ", probably for Jean André ARTZT maitre in 1785. Louis XVI period 85 x 81 x 49 cm ARTZT (Jean-André), born in Frankfurt am Main where his father was a carpenter, came to work in Paris under Louis XVI. In 1778, in the chapel of the Swedish Embassy, he married the daughter of a Strasbourg sculptor, Marie Hoffmann, who, like him, belonged to the Lutheran Church. Having obtained his master's degree on July 22, 1785, Artzt practiced for some time on Rue Saint-Nicolas in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, but after the Revolution, he no longer appears to have had a workshop. We lose track of him after 1803. Works signed J. A. ARTZT are relatively rare. Count Antoine de Salverte owns a secretary with veneered panels, framed with yellow wood marquetry simulating twisted ribbons.
