Frank Maresca & Roger Ricco, American Vernacular. New Di - Lot 49
Frank Maresca & Roger Ricco, American Vernacular. New Discoveries in Folk, Self-Taught, and Outsider Sculpture, introduction by Margit Rowell, Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1991. A reference work on American vernacular sculpture. Provenance: Collection of painter François Bouillon. François Bouillon taught at the École nationale supérieure d'art de Dijon, then at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris. A self-taught artist, as a child he frequented the studio of his painter grandfather, then collected African and Oceanic art objects. Through his many travels, he became interested in the primitive signs and symbols of a universal culture. Using a variety of techniques (drawing, painting, reworked photography, sculpture, installation, etc.), "primitive" elements (stone, earth, fire, feather, bone, tree branch, metal, traces) and recurring forms (spiral, point, cone, cross, inversions, etc.), he creates a body of work in which the manufacturing process plays a key role. For François Bouillon, contemporary artist and collector of primitive art, the modern gesture cannot be separated from a primitive imprint. It is accompanied by a search for origin that, beyond historical and cultural developments, brings us back to the most naked of human beings.
