ITALIAN School circa 1831/35 Portrait of Pope Gregory XVI (1765-1846), born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari. Pope from 1831 to 1846. Oval miniature on ivory. (wears and small lack of material on the right) 7.5 x 6.2 cm at sight Provenance: - Collection of an apostolic nuncio from the middle of the XIXth century. - Kept in his family until today. Bartolomeo Alberto (in Mauro religion) Cappellari, born in Belluno, a city in the north of the Republic of Venice, on 18 September 1765 and died in Rome on 1 June 1846, was a monk priest and Camaldolese abbot elected Pope under the name of Gregory XVI (in Latin Gregorius XVI, in Italian Gregorio XVI), successor of Pius VIII. Elected Pope on February 2, 1831, he was ordained Bishop of Rome and enthroned on the 6th of the same month. He defended the Papal States against the attacks of revolutionary movements, and was at the origin of a revival of missionary commitment overseas.
