Pair of important torches after a design... - Lot 191 - L'Huillier & Associés
Pair of important torches after a design by Dugourc in finely chased and gilt bronze. The mantled candle and the vase-shaped tap stand on a tripod base with lion's paws. The shaft is composed of three terms, or caryatids with female busts, adorned with satyrs' heads and draped with garlands of flowers, ending with feet wearing sandals. The circular base chiseled with a base of acanthus leaves is underlined by a row of large pearls. First half of the 19th century (dent in one of the bases) Height : 32.5 cm - Diameter : 15 cm The composition of these torches is given by a watercolor of Jean Démosthène Dugourc, dated 1790 and kept in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. Identical torches to ours are preserved in the castle of Pilnitz near Dresden, as well as in the Wallace Collection in London; and there was a pair in the old Lagerfeld collection. Jean Demosthene Dugourc (1749-1825), draughtsman and ornamentalist, was at the end of the 18th century one of the main diffusers of the arabesque and Etruscan taste, of which our torches are a brilliant illustration. Draughtsman of the cabinet of Monsieur and steward of the buildings of the Count of Provence (1780), draughtsman of the costumes of the Opera (1783), draughtsman of the Garde Meuble (1784), he worked with his brother-in-law the architect Joseph Bellanger for the tzarevitch Paul of Russia, the silk manufacturer Pernon, founded factories (playing cards, painted paper, crystals), then passed to the service of the King of Spain in 1800, before returning to his position as draughtsman of the Garde Meuble under the Restoration.
