Augustin DUMONT (Paris, 1801 - 1884) Louis... - Lot 43 - L'Huillier & Associés
Augustin DUMONT (Paris, 1801 - 1884) Louis Nicolas Davout in marshal's uniform Large bronze statuette with brown oxidation patina. Signed on the left of the model, on the edge of the base: Agste Dumont. Inscription on the right: Victor Thiebault - Date: 1866. Height : 67 cm - Width of the base : 26.2 cm - Depth of the base : 27.2 cm Following the tradition of the representation of Illustrious Men commissioned by d'Angiviller at the end of the Ancien Régime, Dumont asserts himself from his first historical figure, sure of himself, in a genre where he has not been surpassed and most cities anxious to honor the famous men born within their walls turn to the one who has monopolized the legacy of David d'Angers through the right of talent. This is why Auxerre commissioned the artist to create a statue of Louis Nicolas Davout (Annoux, 1770 - Paris, 1823), Duke of Auerstaedt, Prince of Eckmühl and Peer of France, which was unveiled in 1866. At the request of the family, Augustin Dumont executed this reduction of the monument representing Davout in marshal's uniform, pensive, seeming to meditate on a great war operation. The best tactician of the Empire, he is above all the only marshal who remained undefeated during his military career. Concerned about the quality of the alloys and the perfection of the sand casting in a single jet, which he specialized in, Thiebault gave this large reduction a patina called "pompéi" to evoke the bronzes found in the ashes, a beautiful image of the immortality of the Napoleonic hero.
